1935 | W H Bates was William Henry Bates, born in 1872 who used to produce a shoe polish called ’Gloss Up’ which he made in Hollingworth and later transferring his operation to his home in Hollincross Lane. Presumably the young man standing in the doorway is his son Ellis Bates born in 1908. The shop is more likey to be 110 Victoria Street than 102a Victoria Street as the later was considerably smaller and the shop next door (in the photo) appears to be the bakers’ shop at 112 Victoria Street. |

1945 | The above newspaper advert was printed in The Glossop Chronicle, 21 December 1945, the advert implies there were more Bates working in the shoe shop or the polish business. In 1945 Ellis Bates would have been 37 and records show he had one brother, John, about six years older than him. |
